  14. This file explains how to start the automated 4DOS installation process. 
  15. You can print this file with the command:
  16.  
  17.       copy a:readme.1st prn
  18.  
  19. (modify this command if your diskette is not in drive A:).
  20.  
  21. This is a shareware copy of 4DOS.  4DOS is copyrighted software protect-
  22. ed by US law and international treaty provisions.  Your use of 4DOS is
  23. subject to the terms of the 4DOS License Agreement and Limited Warranty
  24. included in the file LICENSE.DOC.  This file will be visible once you
  25. have installed 4DOS.  The license agreement allows you to use 4DOS for a
  26. trial period of up to 21 days before deciding whether to purchase it. 
  27. Please read this agreement before using 4DOS.

  29. The 4DOS files are stored in compressed form on this disk in the file. 
  30. They can only be extracted using the installation program INSTALL.EXE
  31. (they are not stored in an archive format such as ZIP or ARC).

  33. To install 4DOS automatically on your system, place this disk in any
  34. drive it fits in, and enter the command:
  35.

  37.  
  38. where "x" is the drive that the 4DOS disk is in, for example:
  39.

  41.  
  42. You can also change to the diskette drive and run INSTALL (you MUST use
  43. this approach if you are running DOS 2).  For example:

  48. INSTALL installs 4DOS automatically, but will not modify your system
  49. files such as CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT without your permission.
  50.  
  51.    PLEASE NOTE:  If you have an earlier version of 4DOS on your system,
  52.    do NOT install the 4DOS version 4.0 files in the directory in which
  53.    your old 4DOS files are stored.  Install them in a different direc-
  54.    tory, and read the upgrade information in README.DOC and UPDATE40.DOC
  55.    before beginning work with 4DOS 4.0.

  57. If you prefer to install 4DOS manually, start INSTALL as described
  58. above.  Choose the "Tour Installation" option on the INSTALL main menu. 
  59. This will copy all the 4DOS files to your disk and then stop.  Once the
  60. files are copied, look through chapters 2 and 6 of the 4DOS manual (in
  61. the file 4DOS.DOC).  These chapters contain instructions for manual
  62. installation.  You can also copy files individually using the "Copy
  63. Individual Files" option on the INSTALL main menu.

  65. To view the manual or any of the other 4DOS documentation files
  66. (LICENSE.DOC, APPNOTES.DOC, README.DOC, or UPDATE40.DOC), use any file
  67. viewer (e.g. LIST.COM) or use the 4DOS LIST command once you have 4DOS
  68. installed.  You can print the manual or any of the other documentation
  69. files by COPYing the file to your printer if you like, for example to
  70. print README.DOC:

  72.            copy readme.doc prn
  73.  
  74. These files contain headers, footers, and form feed (new page) char-
  75. acters so it is best to copy them directly to the printer.  You can use
  76. a page formatting program designed to handle this type of file if you
  77. wish (for example the shareware product 4PRINT, which prints long docu-
  78. ments in a condensed format).  However if the program you use can't
  79. handle pre-formatted pages your printout may not look right.  The 4DOS
  80. manual is very long (over 350 pages!) so you may want to view it on-
  81. screen instead of printing it.
  82.  
  83. INSTALL runs best with 475K or more of free memory available.  If your
  84. system has less than about 475K of free memory there may be insufficient
  85. memory for INSTALL to perform the installation actions you select.  If
  86. INSTALL runs out of memory and cannot continue it will exit with a
  87. "Memory allocation failure" error.  If this occurs, remove some memory-
  88. resident programs or device drivers, then re-run INSTALL.  If you have
  89. problems with memory allocation failures in INSTALL and cannot free up
  90. enough memory to avoid them, please contact our technical support de-
  91. partment for assistance.

  93. If you are installing on a system which has only floppy disks, you must
  94. perform some manual steps to get all the files extracted.  First, use
  95. the "Full Installation" or "Tour Installation" option from the main
  96. INSTALL menu.  During the installation process INSTALL will tell you
  97. that there is not enough room on your disk for all of the files, and
  98. give you the option to install only those files required to run 4DOS. 
  99. These files will fit on a 360K floppy disk.  Once you have these files,
  100. see README.DOC for a complete list of all 4DOS files.  Then use the Copy
  101. Individual Files option on INSTALL's main menu to extract any additional
  102. files you want to a separate floppy disk.

  104. Note that the 4DOS ASCII manual, 4DOS.DOC, requires about 1 MB of disk
  105. space and can only be extracted to a hard disk, RAM disk, or high-densi-
  106. ty floppy disk.  If you have only low-density floppy disks and need a
  107. copy of the manual split up into several files, please contact us and we
  108. will supply you with such a copy.
